NN item Rumors Fly, Stock Soars
By Wendy Sharp
November 15, 1999

Get-Rich Tip: Let the rumors fly. Troubled networking equipment manufacturer Newbridge Networks (NN) closed Friday at 20 5/8, up 2 3/8 points for the day and more than 5 points for the week. Rumors of a takeover helped shares creep up. Who's planning a play for the company? Ericsson, Alcatel Alsthom, British systems group Marconi Plc, Tellabs Inc, Fujitsu Ltd. and Siemens AG have all been bandied about as prospective suitors, but none of them have come out with any hard news. At the moment it's pure speculation. Newbridge shareholders surely don't mind the effect of the gossip, but the company isn't going out of its way to make itself a target. It renegotiated a deal with Stanford Telecommunications last week that analysts believe will discourage possible purchasers.
