That's indeed an interesting article. And I think accurate, from other observations I've made of young folks these days.
Yes, we did some good things in the days we were liberals, which means the days when our parents were still willing to support us and drugs, AIDS, and other such ills weren't a major problem for middle class youth, so we were freer to be social activists. Plus, the problems society faced were much "cleaner" than those it faces now -- Jim Crow racism, the Vietnam War, problems like that where the right answers were really quite clear.
I'm reminded of Churchill's comment: Any man under 40 who isn't a liberal has no heart; any man over 40 who isn't a conservative has no brain. As with all aphorisms, it can't be taken literally, but it does have a significant kernel of truth in it. |
