Perhaps I'm being stringent in my definition of "observed". A meteor strike on the Moon's far side would be unobservable from a terrestrial vantage, esp. if there's heavy cloud. But the impact structure persists and will be ultimately mapped. So the event wasn't directly observed, but it could be reconstructed.
If I'm hiking in Big Sky country and I find a fallen tree, I'll deduce that it did indeed fall there, unless there's a rockslide right next to it :-).
