I sort of get an implication from the whole thing that with this subsector of semi's, the major fear (in addition to all the INTC issues) is that you have a number of relatively small competitors who may end up beating each other's brains out going forward in order to maintain a position or steal someone else's. It's difficult to imagine that any of these companies will be able to totally eclipse the others. PC companies will probably always play one against the other. Worst case is it gets like the disk drive industry two years ago, when everyone was cratering their prices to knock out everybody else.

Multiple expansion seems to be going to those semi companies that analysts feel have clear product differentiation and therefore some price control (ALTR, INTC, MXIM) in addition to clearly superior execution even if there is not overwhelming differentiation (ATML).

I am long in SIII (and recently picked up a little CHPS after the fall), so I am hoping this is not the case. Comments from the thread?
