We have a similar situation in the vacation resort area of Mammoth Lakes, California. It's a volcanic region, and some years ago there were earthquake swarms and a carbon dioxide release that killed off some trees. As best I recall the government scientists gave some dire warnings, but got reined in somewhat when the local business interests complained about falling real estate values.

There's also an issue at Yellowstone about an underground heat plume that's making some folks nervous.
