Bob, <Haven't you also noticed that his speculations rarely prove true?>

There's a lot of intelligence behind his speculations, so his guesses are better than a lot of others.

As for Via, if they stick to the low end of things and AMD sticks to the high end with Athlon, things are OK, I guess. But it's the middle that gets pretty messy. Via is no doubt going to drive upward into higher margin territory, because they have to if they want to see good returns on their Cyrix and Centaur investments. But AMD also wants to try and cover a broad spectrum of markets with Athlon. The overlap in the middle could be a point of contention.

I don't know how much manufacturing capacity Via has access to. I'm sure a trickle of Slot A chipsets are not a problem for them. But I don't think Via can be the primary chipset supplier for the mainstream Athlon platforms. This situation could be a case of placing too much trust on a potential competitor.
