The Europe of Mussolini, Hitler and that Spanish fascist jerk, burning of witches at the stake, the dark ages, heresy, excommunication, pogroms, the Final Solution, eugenics, Lamark, socialism, communist revolution, Hungarian suppression, Balkan mayhem, multiple German attacks on neighbours [1870, 1915, 1939], the land of bureaucratic repression, Nanny-statism, kleptocracy, Papal infallibility, the Maginot Line and now 11% unemployment in the old Nazi villages. Humanism, democracy, freedom and enlightenment barely get a word in edgewise.
