The Kissinger-Nixon doctrine of befriending China to contain Soviet expansion was right in the 1970s. But, that doctrine is absolutely irrational now. What will the US gain by befriending Communist dictators in China? By such befriending, US is seriously compromising its policy of eradicating communism and dictatorship from earth, losing any hope of liberating Tibet, and is unable to stop escalating tension with the world's largest stable democracy.
True, an access to Chinese markets is important. But, a rational US policy now should be directed towards removing dictators in China, even though it may be a temporary setback on US economic interests. Democratising China should be the goal of the world.
A communist China is not a natural strategic partner of the US. Bill Clinton fails to understand this, or is simply following the outdated Nixon-Kissinger doctrine. He has taken a wrong initiative of slapping a democratic India that never attacked either Pakistan or China and was rather attacked by the latter and so had to do the nuclear tests in the wake of Pakistan's Chinese supplied missile tests.
The whole US policy towards India is not in the best long-term interest of Americans. Americans are not made aware of the realities in South Asia. Newt, Kissinger, Carter, Moynihan and others are doing a right job -- a true favor to Americans. |
