No, this isn't male and female, but the trees are not self-fertile, a lot of trees are like that. Not sure why, some are, and some aren't. Montmorency cherries, for example, are self-fertile, and so are Lapins cherries, but most aren't. Apple trees require pollinators, but a lot of orchards use crab apples, which are much more resistant to pests and diseases, as the pollinators.

And then I've got to get bees, but I don't have to worry about that for a few years.

You're right, it's very entertaining.
