In terms of the car manufacturers - the North American big three have always been reactive while the Asian car makers have been proactive. Right now, the Big three are focused on huge vehicles (such as Dodge bringing back the Hemi) while Toyota has said in ten years all their engines will be hybrids. They are the leaders and the NA car makers are the followers. The NA car makers give us what we want but I think when the oil shortages hit home, the Asian car makers will give us what we need.

And when the Big three get caught (again) behind the trend they will push out vehicles and technologies that are substandard. The oil crisis upcoming may be the ned of the Big Three. They have enough financial problems now let alone if they get caught badly behind the trend.
