I want to say something about abiotic oil, and the comment that somebody made that methane is found in parts of the solar system that have no life. There are ways to make hydrocarbons without life. Synfuels can be made by the Fischer-Troph process. Carbon monoxide and hydrogen go in to the reactor, and diesel fuel comes out. A different reaction starts with carbon monoxide and hydrogen and produces methane. This kind of chemistry probably goes on around dying stars. When new stars and planets form the methane ices will end up in the outer parts of the planetary system.

This kind of chemistry could in theory make oil and gas without biology being involved. However, after 150 years of drilling oil and gas fields, no clear evidence of abiotic oil has ever been found. If abiotic oil was common, then plenty of evidence for it would have already been found.

If the abiotic oil theory were true, it would make no difference to the case for peak oil. New oil and gas are formed too slowly to replace what is being produced.
