The questions you ask regarding patents would really take an expert to answer. IMO the recent intellectual property rights which was entered into by various countries seemed to be directed toward copying of CD's and perhaps other consumer products, and was not a world-wide one step patent system. For patents in the medical areas, the key countries are the US, Japan, and Germany, i.e. the biggest markets. Once these are locked up, it would be difficult to profitably market to the rest of the world expensive and sophisticated medical products. In fact, some medical products for tropical diseases don't get marketed at all because tropical countries are too poor to buy the products, all patent issues aside.
