How is the statement 'we support the troops' to be interpreted regarding the troops who enlisted to serve as an agent of our violent forces and their objectives in Iraq?

As I mentioned earlier, I think that in that context it would mean "we want to bring the troops home so they will be safe and not engaged in all that nasty stuff." Or they're supporting by beating on the administration and the military complex for not providing the troops with perfect equipment.

That's their way of supporting the troops--playing the nanny and saving them from their misguided selves and from their misguided CIC. It's no different from supporting a relative who is living on the streets in the drug culture by dragging him out and sticking him in rehab. Or supporting him by making sure he has clean needles so he won't damage himself further by sharing.

It seems to me that, for our purpose, "support" is in the eye of the person making the claim of being a supporter. If you have a nanny POV, you support best by doing what you think is in that person's best interests, not necessarily what that person considers to be his interests. As long as you have the person's best interests at heart, you can claim the role of supporter.

To the extent that there are some nuts way out on the fringe who actually would prefer that troops die to make their point, that's certainly not support. But then those people aren't claiming to be supporters. Not to my knowledge. The anti-war people who are claiming to be troop supporters sincerely mean it in the natural meaning of the phrase, best I can tell. If it's sincere, it ain't code.
