Cashmere couple in 90s dead of carbon monoxide poisoning

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CASHMERE, Wash. -- A man who was honored for historic preservation work and his wife, both in their 90s, died after a car was left running in the garage of their home, investigators said.

Roy and Marie Maves, 95 and 93, were found dead in bed Wednesday by a health care worker arriving for a scheduled visit, Chelan County Sheriff Michael T. Harum said. Their dog also was found dead.

Autopsies on the couple were pending, but death appeared to be from carbon monoxide poisoning, Harum said.

"It appears to be an accident," Harum said. "There didn't appear to be anything unusual at the scene."

Roy Maves was honored by the Evergreen State Society in 1994 for helping to restore a waterwheel listed on the National Register of Historic Sites as part of the county's Historical Museum Pioneer Village in Cashmere.
