Compaq Ships 3,000,000th Server To Planet Online

12/3/99 11:01:59 AM

DEC 3, 1999, M2 Communications - Compaq today became the first company to ship 3,000,000
industry-standard servers, which is more than the combined shipments of IBM, HP and Dell,
demonstrating Compaq's dominance in providing high-performance NonStopa eBusiness solutions for
customers' most demanding applications.

Planet Online, a leading backbone Internet Service Provider (ISP), purchased the three millionth
server, a Compaq ProLiant 8500 8-way. This not only reinforces Compaq's growing strength in the
ISP and Application Service Provider (ASP) markets, but also builds upon its leadership in the
Industry Standard Server and Web server markets.

Planet Online handles over 400,000 emails per hour and receives more than one million hits per day
on the websites that they host. Reliability is therefore key and innovative servers such as 8-way
ProLiants were an obvious choice. Currently, more than 2,500 companies have their web services
hosted within the Planet Online network operations centre. Planet Online, headquartered in the UK,
is the UK Internet Service Provider Association's 'Best Business ISP' and is the ISP behind Dixons'
Freeserve, and the Internet company of Energis (the rapidly growing FTSE 100 telecoms company).

"This landmark speaks volumes about the broad customer endorsement of Compaq's ProLiant
standards-based platforms," said Joe McNally, Vice-President and Managing Director Compaqn UK
and Ireland. "Working closely with our customers and partners Compaq has become the only
company to ship three million industry-standard servers, making us the clear market leader. Compaq
is committed to providing customers with the most manageable, reliable and highest performing
servers to maximise the competitiveness in a NonStop world."

John Beaumont, managing director of Planet Online, accepted delivery of the three millionth server
from Compaq's President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Capellas, at the GartnerGroup
Symposium/ITxpo in Cannes.

Compaq's 8-way ProLiant servers offer new levels of power across a broad range of applications,
changing the way enterprise customers, ISPs and ASPs conduct eBusiness. Compaq introduced its
first industry-standard server in 1989 and by 1996 had sold its one millionth server. Less than two
years after this, the company reached its two million milestone, and just 13 months later shipped its
three millionth server. Today, one in every three servers shipped is a Compaq ProLiant.

Company Background Compaq is the second largest computer company in the world and a leading
provider of hardware, software, solutions and services to provide customers with competitive business
advantage in today's Non-Stop eBusiness world.

Compaq was established in the UK in 1984 and is headquartered in Richmond, Surrey. Its products
and services are sold and supported through a network of marketing partners across the UK.

Customer advice, reseller locations and information about Compaq and its products can be found at
