I dont' think the significance is Europe as a market but having your "standard" established world wide. It would be rather unfortunate if QCOM ended up in 3G market in the same position GSM is in today's market - first out of the gate but inferior technologically. The stakes are much higher, and if all of Europe agrees on a standard(NTT??) then for new entrants/markets/providers this would be a strong marketing point. Of course the bigger issue would be the Ericcson's and Nokia's would use all their marketing muscle to trumpet this around the world. IMHO it is vital that QCOM not lose this battle.

PS I hope the success of the Vodaphone trials(according to the PR statement) does influence the European standards body.
