If Intel copies x86-64 in Yamhill, but only has support for 4G of memory, what's the point? In no way, shape or form could anyone consider it a 64 bit CPU or compatible with x86-64.

And if they try to support more than 4G of memory via mapping, that requires both support from Microsoft and new chipsets. They can't get MS's support if they wait until March 2003 before committing to it.

I think the whole idea of Intel basing a technology decision on the success, or lack thereof, of Hammer -- goes against common sense and also against Intel's corporate culture.
