"Destroy a country over a kidnapping?"

I have heard no one talk about destroying Lebanon.

"If this is the reason ..."

The reason for the current violence, or support of the violence is more fundamental than a reaction to kidnapping. If it were simply the fear caused by having a loved one kidnapped, the solution would be to propitiate with the far less costly ransom or trades.

The reason for the overwhelming reaction is that to do anything else would be to countenance terrorism as an acceptable way of life.

Terrorism carries its own shock and awe, far more powerful than conventional militaries lobbing missiles at one another. To assuage an act of terror by trading hostages or performing head counts of dead people in combat, to determine some sort of fair fighting status, is to surrender a victory to terrorism.
