Paul,

Thank you. HP is going to have to do a lot more than push some
ads to convince the world and themselves of their commitment to
Unix. I happen to have inside information about HP & its Unix
platform. Their commitment to Unix died a long time ago, starting
about the same time they hired a MSFT bigot as second-in-command
to Lew Platt. Their Unix development team resources have been
summarily drained since then & HP has pushed NT like crazy.

In fact, Intel signed their deal with SUNW to do a 64-bit Merced
in part because they had lost confidence in HP's ability to deliver
64-bit Unix on time with the release of the chip (which was
developed by HP). Ever since, HP has been doing some serious
damage control in the media.

HP made a serious strategic mistake in putting so much emphasis on
NT. If they want to compete with SUNW in the enterprise arena, they
have to get their Unix act together, and soon. Otherwise, they
will be pushed ever closer to the role of another reseller for
Intel.

cheers,

cherylw
