I remember lying in bed, covers over my head, with my glow-in-the-dark rosary after seeing Song of Bernadette and praying fervently that Mary NOT appear to me.

The schools, parochial and public, closed for the afternoon so that we could see this movie. I was the kind of child who was convinced statues were going to cry and wounds bleed. I read about LUcia and Our Lady of Lourdes and tortured myself with the knowledge that if I received a visitation, and the authorities threatened to throw me in a vat of boiling oil if I didn't admit I was making it up, I would LIE and say, heck yeah, I invented the whole thing. And then go to hell.
I made a confession to the priest of this terrible weakness. I'm not sure what my penance was.
I must have given those priests some smiles. If I were my mother, I would have worried about me. BUt maybe she never knew.
Or mayyyyybe-- she was in her bed with her rosary praying for the same thing...
