Usually it takes some egregious offense like being AWOL or sexual harassment before the process to fire a teacher begins. And in many school districts (though I don't know how it is in Seattle), that process is notoriously long and inefficient.

Typically with gov't jobs, its been harder to fire someone but that has changed. And teaching jobs are considered to be gov't jobs. But its never been the free ride that Rs claim.

Schools don't often get the best candidates because the salary isn't commensurate with the salaries most professional degrees command. Because of the salary issue, there is a serious shortage of male teachers which I believe hurts the performance of boys in school.......esp boys of color.

Anyway, I was hoping you could provide more specifics on how those two teachers you referred to got fired and why, but if it's not a matter of public record, then all we have to go by is your word.

I only know the story behind one of them and that's because he taught across the hall from me. He was forever throwing kids out in the hall..... some of these kids were in my classes and were great kids. One day when I saw one of the girls in my class out in the hall..........I asked why she was out in the hall........this is a girl with which I never had trouble. Her response.........Mr. blank isn't you. Since it was awkward, I didn't pursue with her what she meant.

Remember I was new......I wasn't privy to all the behind the scenes stuff. In any case, at the end of the year, he was let go.

I'll tell you this..........the kids know who like and respect them...........poor kids are esp sensitive to this issue. I can't tell you how hard it is to be a teacher in a poor school with poor kids who are mostly kids of color. If you are white, you are the enemy and if you are of color, you're a Tom. One white guy in my program nearly quit the program over that issue. But once they trust you, you are in like flynn. They will do almost whatever you ask. I hope I can get back to teaching but right now I have to earn some serious dollars.
