Atrion Announces "Extranet" Remote Access Service Business Wire - October 22, 1997 15:33 %ATRION %MASSACHUSETTS %RHODE-ISLAND %COMED %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %INTERACTIVE %MULTIMEDIA %INTERNET V%BW P%BW PROVIDENCE, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 22, 1997-- Atrion Networking Corporation today announced a new Remote Access service offering called "Extranet". Extranet provides outsourcing of remote access services for corporations around New England. Rather than purchasing and installing remote access equipment at their own location(s), corporate, government, and educational MIS Managers can now subscribe to Atrion's Extranet service and dial into the Extranet Points-of-Presence (POP's), where the data will be multiplexed and routed across a high speed circuit directly to the customer's host facility. Extranet provides options for IPX protocol, token authentication security, and remote control as well as remote node IP connectivity. Users may also elect to access the Internet directly from Extranet's Operations Center in order to off-load the corporate LAN. By early November customers will have the option of dialing in through the Internet using Virtual Private Networking (VPN) technology. VPN allows for secure tunneling and encryption of user data as it traverses the Internet on the way to the customer's host facility. "This is a natural progression for Atrion," notes Atrion President, Charles Nault. "After years of providing successful high end Remote Access systems for our customers, we now see the technology at a point where reliable, secure, multi-protocol remote access can be provided to anyone from anywhere. Our unique implementation of the newest technologies allow clients to dial a local number anywhere in the world and communicate over a secure, encrypted tunnel direct to their backbone network. Our clients have been asking us to relieve the burden of modem pool support while still addressing legacy applications. We are now well equipped to do that and have built a dependable, redundant, secure environment for our customers to dial into." One such customer is Statewide MLS. "We were faced with the common dilemma of needing additional capacity and speed," stated Mike Letendre, Director of MIS. "Atrion's Extranet Service allowed us to solve both issues without the capital outlay that a complete upgrade and expansion of our modem pool would have required. So far we are impressed with the performance." Extranet service guarantees fixed user to port ratios and provides monthly usage reports to the customer. This eliminates the common problem of overbooking faced by most Internet Service Providers (ISP's). Extranet is only available to businesses and institutions and is not intended for individual residential users. Pricing is based on level of service, protocols, security requirements, and access methods. More information is available by calling (401) 736-6400. Atrion Networking is a privately held corporation providing value added remote access integration services since 1987. Atrion is headquartered in Warwick, RI and provides integration services throughout New England. CONTACT: Atrion Craig Maidrand (401) 736-6400 X115
