Fed will likely keep rates steady

WASHINGTON — Federal Reserve policymakers, facing slower economic growth and higher oil prices, are likely to keep interest rates unchanged Tuesday. That was the widespread expectation Monday among private economists, who believe the central bank will leave rates alone for a third straight meeting. Almost two-thirds of economists surveyed Sept. 21-26 by USA TODAY think the Federal Reserve is through raising interest rates and that its next move will be to cut them — possibly in the first half of 2001. None of the economists surveyed sees an interest rate move Tuesday.
