They created the 2 Senator thing to protect the smaller states. They created the House representation based on "population" to protect the basic tenets of democracy. The Electoral College was really more about "elitism" and "geography" than it was about protecting the small states. It wasn't like the small states would carry any MORE weight because of the electoral college. Saying the "fathers" were way smarter than me doesn't mean that they weren't way smarter than YOU too.
