I understood Lawrence's comment to be a demonstration that multiple heads on an arm wouldn't be faster, because if they were, then an 8 heads on 4 platters drive would also be faster than a 2 heads on 1 platter drive for the same reason (given similar platter densities, track/sector configurations, etc.).

My guess was that this is true because usage patterns minimize the real-world benefit of not having to move the arm to continue reading.

I found his example to be quite insightful.
