I don't think they see it as lying...they just regard the truth as too precious to be given away to strangers.

In the West, a common dilemma in fiction is "stick with my buddies or tell the truth?" I don't think this is a dilemma in the Arab world, but rather a no-brainer -- of course you stick with your buddies and say whatever is necessary to say.
