For a really fascinating read check out amazon.com We could discuss Machiavelli all day long I suspect, but he was so little understood for so long that it is the remediation of his life and work in a historical and philosophical context that I find fascinating. This has only occurred within the last 2-3 decades as I recall and a vaguely also recall that it had something to do with a book by a SMU business school professor.
