It is an observable phenomenon of nature that certain social animals work together to defend one of their own or to defend their territory. Examples are fire ants, bees, and humans.

Whether the group of humans are organized as nations, inner city criminal gangs, or US presidents, they act when they perceive their kind to be threatened. An example is President Ford letting President Nixon off the hook.

Appointment of a special prosecutor is great politics and sometimes is a mechanism for turning over some political rocks. I doubt whether the legal system will permit itself to be put through another public show so soon after the IRS scandal was displayed after all these years. There are far too many rich and powerful people and organizations involved to permit any progress to happen now.

Another example of how groups of humans take care of their own occurred in my home town in the last couple years. Two men with good reputations for many years were found to be convicted felons in possession of firearms. One was a former director of the county jail, a member of the law enforcement community. The other was a private citizen who owned a business which required him to carry cash generated by his business.

Excerpts from articles follow.

June 1995: Publicly disclosed that former jail director Nate Caldwell had a 1963 manslaughter conviction and that he possessed two handguns illegally.

Palazzi, 58, was sentenced in November 1995 to more than 15 years in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He lost his appeal in June, and the U.S. Attorney's Office has asked U.S. District Judge Maurice Paul to revoke bond and send him to prison.

Former jail director Caldwell was allowed to walk away. Private citizen Palazzi, a productive taxpaying citizen who stayed out of trouble for more than two decades, is serving his 15 years.
