Latency has pretty much nothing to do with it. The big issues are memory bandwidth / cost (which includes a lot more than just the chip price, like royalties .), time to market, number of suppliers, board cost, design reuse, etc.

P.S. The other big reason the graphics industry rejected Rambus is because TeamDDR took pictures of them cavorting with teenaged girls in Singapore. If they use Rambus, TeamDDR releases the photos. The same tactic was used on Nvidia, VIA, ALi, SiS and Serverworks. They tried it on Intel, but it didn't work because, well, because of an absence of a necessary cavorting component... |
