All DDR SDRAM Chipsets Got Cheaper [1:59 pm] Gavric
A real cutthroat battle is raging throughout the DDR SDRAM chipset sector. It has
resulted in another price cut. In particular, as we read here, chipsets by ALi (Aladdin
Pro 5 and MAGiK 1) are pricing at $20-21 instead of the former $22-24, those by
SiS are now cheaper than $20 (SiS635T with Tualatin support is available for $19).
But the leaders are VIA’s children: presently these chipsets have got even with their
ALi counterparts (let us remind you that chipsets by VIA started at about $35 and then
were priced down to $26-28 per item in over-10000-piece units). It’s noteworthy that
unlike SiS and ALi, VIA sells its chipsets to mainboard manufacturers for $20 per item
only after a rebate. That is, a manufacturer should pay by the old price first, and after
the chipsets are shipped VIA returns part of this sum.
Well, chipset manufacturers have kept their promise to promote DDR SDRAM
chipsets: currently such chipsets are only $1-2 more expensive than those with PC133
support. Now it’s up for the mainboard manufacturers to introduce reasonable prices
for their DDR SDRAM products.
As for the future of DDR SDRAM chipsets selling for the new prices, we dare assume
the following:

ALi chipsets have hardly any chances to gain the public’s recognition;
Chipsets by SiS could’ve been pretty smart (at least the promising SIS735), but the
company’s manufacturing capacities are obviously not enough;
VIA chipsets are quite nice, but they can’t boast splendid performance (especially
Apollo Pro266);
After the launch of Intel 845 chipset with PC133 SDRAM (and some time later DDR
SDRAM) support, the prospects of ALi, SiS and VIA chipsets for Socket370
platforms are dim.
