VHS had one extra hour of record time - this made a lot of difference to those who could put 3 movies on one tape instead of two. Admittedly the picture quality was slightly worse because of the smaller head diameter (however that also resulted in smaller camcorders than Beta).

AMD has always been a generation behind however - they may have had a faster 386 (and 486) but Inetl was pushing 486s (and Pentiums repectively), and commanding a higher $ for each cpu.
