Alan, you hit a point that s3 shareholders stand by.

Let's take a look a the Intel situation.

--Intel is making a ton of money with its process chip.
--They own 85% of that market, AMD and others have nothing to lose by producing 'something' to attack Intel with. Intel doesn't want to lose their competitive edge in that market by using that money for R&D for 3D chips.
--Let's say they do enter the 3d market. Who has more knowledge of this market? Who has a leg up to all other competitors? Can Intel give the research and time and money to try to compete with S3, and still be looking over their shoulders for competition of their core business?

S3 is in position, and HAS BEEN in position. To exploit the 25 Million 3d chips to be shipped in 1997. Current market share is 51%.

--this doesn't include S3's venture into audio, the luring DVD, the booming pc gaming biz. S3 is also gaining mkt share in the laptop area . If they can penatrate more than the anticipated 10%, look out!

--Plus S3 is packing a 42% gross margin.

--I know Intel is big,bad & and pretty. but they are more likely to buy a company like S3 , than dump a ton of money and COMPETE WITH S3!!

I have been thinking of why they have done so poorly after earnings.... maybe the "Whisper #'s" were over .30 eps.????

Just my few and tired opinions at 10:45pm

"the best is yet to come" (but when ?) :)
