I don't think anyone argues that that wouldn't be great.

The argument is about how best to make that happen.

What isn't really arguable, at this point, is that every significant federal government action in pursuit of that goal has backfired and the result has been that the people who were to be helped were instead harmed.

At some point we, as a nation, have to learn that government is highly ineffective at helping the poor.
