Wow, thanks, that would be a huge break through. Stories like that are critical to keep up one's spirits -- not just because of the particulars, but much more importantly as a reminder of how fast things could change with some effort.

It's been known for a long time that alkaline fuel cells can work with liquid electrolytes using non-precious metals like nickle but I thought PEMs and platinum were still needed for decent performance.

Maybe when Matt Simmons puts on his brave cheerful face that's not quite believeable he'll turn out to be right after all; put humanity with its back against the wall and all sorts of magic may happen. Hey, it's not a thrilla' unless you really think there's a chance the hero (and everyone else) could die at the end.
