Thursday November 18, 10:01 am Eastern Time Company Press Release Boys & Girls Clubs of America Selects Cabletron to Kick Off New Technology Initiative High Performance Switching Solution to Extend Access to Educational Resources ROCHESTER, N.H. and ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 1999--Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today announced that Boys & Girls Clubs of America (B&GCA) has selected Cabletron's networking solutions to create a network where all members, regardless of the size and location of their local Club, will have access to the educational applications offered by the organization's national headquarters. The Cabletron solution will provide remote Clubs with available access to distance learning applications, membership enrollment information, email, and the Internet.
B&GCA's national headquarters installed its new network backbone infrastructure, valued at $250,000, in October 1999. In addition, the organization plans to provide network connectivity to more than 2,300 remote Clubs over the next three years. Indiana will be the first state to connect to the headquarter's network, with installation beginning in its fifty-six remote Clubs in the year 2000.
''Boys & Girls Clubs of America opens five new Clubs a week, and has more than 2,300 Club sites currently. We plan to open a technology center for every Club so that each member can benefit from the same resources the national headquarters has to offer,'' said B&GCA's vice president of information systems, Mark Baker. ''Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router and SmartSwitches provide us with a high capacity, redundant network infrastructure designed to support the future bandwidth requirements of interactive educational applications.''
The Cabletron solution includes the award-winning SmartSwitch Router 8000, SmartSwitch 6000, and ELS100-24TXM, providing switched Fast Ethernet connectivity to network users. In addition, the SmartSwitch Router 510 provides connectivity to remote Clubs over B&GCA's wide area network (WAN).
