Sounds like he’s a sensible person.

Sometimes, acting super emotional and kind of unbalanced and even bizarre can be an effective strategy. There may be a system behind the madness. I’m sure many journos, politicians and other people will say - “If they’re so insane about this, I better sit this out... they have ten ways from Sunday to get at me if I piss them off”.

Pick your battles, etc.

so, indirectly, it’s intimidation.
