Dog,

Well said.

Another comment on so called open systems.

Sun pretended to be an open systems company some years ago when it allowed outside companies to build clones of Sun workstations. However, the companies that got involved in the business soon learned that they were not playing with a full deck of cards. Sun had an enormous advantage in the price and availability of the Sparc chipsets. There was no true competition at the chip level as we have with AMD, NSM and IDTI versus INTC.

The only advantage that the clone companies had was in not performing system testing on their machines. System Test is an expensive task that is essential for new versions of hardware, applications and OS. But then would you want to buy a computer from a company that performed no system testing?

Regards,

Jim Kelley
