Cluster capable, big SMP capable, reliability which beat the mainframe operating systems hands-down? That was 10 years before any UNIX had similar capability. >> The pdp=8 days were a little before my time but I do remember playing with the VMS on VAXes. Was not aware that VAX was SMP capable. Didn't it just have a "VAX" cpu and talked to peripherals over "UNI"/"Q" bus? Could it actually have multiple CPU's on a basckplane? Didn't think so, but could be wrong. And if so, did they have Spin-locking like mechanism etc. that NT uses? VMS. The dog! I vaguely remember that people made liberal use of shared memory to boost performance for IPC. Also that later VMS introduced some good ideas like RPC that were later adopted by others.
