Companies like that don't get their wishes confused with what they think will actually happen. At one time the large oil companies believed we were entering a period where oil and gas would be scarcer and scarcer. They responded by buying up a majority of the nation's coal reserves (thinking coal gasification and liquifaction would be a way forward) and spent vast sums on solar power. Only when events changed their mind did they pull the plug on those things.
