So does that mean the world would be better off if China were our equal? China is considered a rapidly growing power. China as our equal would necessarily mean that it would have a much larger sphere of influence that they would dominate (and I think DOMINATE is really the right word).

I wouldn't have a problem with your idea if the other potential world power of our stature were a democracy with governing values sort of like our own. Perhaps India will be such a power someday.
