Intel is trying to play a key role on the networking concerning future NET PC atchitecture. If you remember it is Intel's aggresive price cut on ethernet card which pull down 3Com profit margin and stock price. And Intel is still far lagging on the NIC market shares.
They might try to control the IT from microprocessor, NIC, remote access to switching. Who knows.
Last year UUNET was acquired by MFS, and two months later MFS was acquired by WORLDCOM. Now WORLDCOM is a big player in the Internet market.
