CK, thanks for the search. Even Win Media Center cannot detect a DVD. I'm sure I played DVD movies a long time ago. Last week I played one I had just burned, but some posters said commercial DVDs don't work for them while burned ones do.

At least it's not a hardware problem.

Did MS install something to disable playing DVDs?
