Depends on how much printing one actually does on a monthly basis. IMO, a laser printer would be more than needed for the average small home user. I have an HP 4 in 1 ink jet that has served my multi needs very well. I have been getting black ink cartridge refills at Costco for $6.99 for the past year. Solid color cartridges are $5.99. They are excellent quality, normally refill in less than an hour while you shop, and last as long as the originals (maybe even longer.
