I could tell that Bush was listening to a voice in his hear - I assume it was a metaphorical voice - maybe the voice of Karen Hughes - "Don't try to be smart! Don't get cute! Stay on message!" (I have a little voice like that but don't always listen.) (And yes, I do talk to myself!)

They were playing to two separate audiences.

Kerry played to the moderator and Bush played to the camera.

That kind of said it all for me.

But Kerry's not dumb, either he thinks that works for him, or he will learn.
