I actually have a ground strap. I use to put it on when I was working on my Apple //e system years ago (it was actually a clone and my dad built a wooden box - but then I was flipping in chips here and there) - something I should use more I think when opening up the computer.

Thanks - I think "I needed that". Money is tight for me lately (just coming off a car loan and TFSA is priority). If I spend some energy and come up with a few candidates for MOBOs etc - hopefully I can jump when they offer a sale/rebate.

As for the cases - yeah -- I was actually looking into buying an uATX MOBO (Micro) and the problem came down to either HEIGHT or LENGTH for the cases. Some literally say they will or will not work in a micro but sometimes you need to rely on dimensions (something that I prefer to qualify). The purpose of the micro was to build a TV box. The idea I had was a USB key boot (linux) - no HDD. Cost was reasonable but still in the $400 range. I abandoned when I found I could get $120 linux TV boxes and went with that route. Not necessarily was it then or looking back now, a great decision, but I resolved that at $120 x 4 rooms - v. $400 x 4 rooms --- I could manage on the $120 box and scrapping it in a few years and was content at doing that.

I have two non-notebook boxes
~ P4 in the Antec (circa 2003) - this has died. I never resolved the problem - basically it would auto-reboot. (trust me I replaced EVERYTHING but the memory - without any HDDs and just CD boots it would reboot). Gave up - but the case is reusable. However the PSU is questionable - those become obsolete as well since the newer MOBOs (CPUS?) need an 8pin connector and I don't have that. Sucks to be me.

~ Dual-Dual Core-Xeon (used circa 2006). Not a bad machine but want something new.

Question cow - regarding this statement The mobo is easy to put in. Just put the standoffs in and you'll probably have to put in either 6 or 9 small screws. The scariest part for me is always putting the cpu cooler. I'm afraid of using too much force clamping it down and breaking the cpu in the process.
... for the MOBO installation are there any "parts" from the case required? In other words, all the pieces to mount the MOBO to the case are WITH the MOBO. So if I rip out the old MOBO, I don't have to fear that when they originally installed it, they tossed extra parts I may need with a NEW MOBO?

I understand fully that the MOBO + CASE must be the same (ATX style or whatever). That I will determine after the MOBO is chosen.

Cheers!
