Neocon - I think it would be true(r) to say that Gillipoli turned out to be Churchill's Achilles Heel. The concept was brilliant - but he lacked political support and the follow through was ineffective on that account. Gallipoli was used for years as a stick against Churchill by his political foes - but I think the balance of opinion now is that it was a good idea which died from lack of political will at home for a 'second front'. (Just by way of interest only my father was there, and wounded, aged 18 if that) But in apeing Churchill I find Blair pathetic - in fact his recent pronouncements seem more and more divorced from political reality. I heard that one of his first statements, cameras clicking, was from Churchill's underground bomb shelter!! Actually I still can't believe it. d
