Hi Neo, I am no where near an expert on the huge volumes of work John Dewey has produced. My impression, from professors that I hold in high esteem who have studied his work, is his philosophies have been twisted by the educational establishment, and now conservatives point to him as an escape goat to the failings of the government school system.

From the limited readings I have done, he was a great philosopher who discussed freedom and culture and referred to the states of politics, economics, science, art and morality as the elements of the culture that determine the state of the society. And he argues convincingly that emotions are much more potent than reason in shaping public perception. As you said, he was also a big believer in vocational education. And saw the need for a systemic system of teaching skills to those not attending higher levels of education. This may have been interpreted as disdain toward elite culture, my impression is that he recognized the need for all types of knowledge workers, far earlier than others in the educational field.

Speaking of great philosophers and thinkers who have influenced the world. Have you ever read Hugh Nibley, the great Mormon philosopher and thinker? I am not a mormon, but I can really appreciate his writings. Especially the paper he wrote on the difference between management and leadership. Little read, it describes the differences clearer than anyone IMHO.
