It's a chicken and egg situation. American individualism is no longer as robust as it once used to be. We allow our politicians to have too much power -- and power corrupts. In turn, they bribe and corrupt us in many different ways. By now, instead of public servants we have a class of political bosses.

There is that. We could get into a discussion of gerrymandering and term limits... but it's probably not the place or time.
