Asking for help. Have had my Compaq Presario 5900Z for about a week. I'm having a weird problem with my internet connection. Unit came with the 6MB DSL/56K modem. I am using 56K setup and have verified that the switch on the back of the computer is in the right position. It happens that about every 2 to 3 minutes while surfing any of the message boards, I get stalled for 40 seconds. I can be surfing fine, then can't do anything. I wait 40 seconds, and I get going again. This has happened consistently since I got the PC. I even signed up with a different ISP and have the same problem, so it would appear it's in the phone lines or my PC. I should note that I have a 5 year old 180MMX Qantex with a 28K modem, that doesn't seem to have the problem. However, my 150 MMX Toshiba laptop has a similar problem with its 28K modem and even disconnects me sometimes when doing member authentication on sites like Etrade. I should also mention that I have a dedicated phone line I use for internet service. I suspect that my problem is in the local phone lines as I live in a somewhat rural area. I'm just wondering if anyone has any insight into these types of problems and can provide some info before I call the phone company. Thanks in advance. By the way, other than this problem, the machine is killer.
