I'm not sure about the formal correctness of the definitions of Islam and Islamism, but I agree with the thought. In that same vein, Christianity and the "Christianism" of the Inquisition were very different movements, generally linked when someone wishes for justification in rejecting or attacking the religion.

Islam is the religion, plus its code of laws and commentaries. It is 1400 + years old.

Islamism is a modern political movement that rolls up warmed-over fascism in the green flag of Islam, and creates a new flavor of theocratic fascism. Islamism is about 40 years old, or 200 years old if you count their Wahhabi progenitors as Islamists. Islamism is a reaction to globalization and the triumph of the West. It is a very modern movement that looks to progress by regressing to a perfect 7th century that never was.
